Layout Data Preparation: Data Sources, Workflows and Common Problems

Laying out on a construction site using a robotic total station is becoming more common across the country. And while there are specific functions and workflows unique to each manufacturer, the “button pushing” for each is mostly the same. Moving from a tape measure to a robotic total station delivers similar productivity gains regardless of the manufacturer. But the biggest threat to increased productivity with a robotic total station can be the data source(s), and problems with data will prevent any system from achieving the desired productivity.

Some contractors have in-house CAD/BIM/Detailing departments, while others get files from an engineer or the general contractor. Some contractors can only get PDF files because no one wants to send them CAD files. Not all CAD files are created the same. There is no absolute standard for how to draw/design in AutoCAD or Revit. Some detailers draw 1:1, while others draw at a scale. The capabilities of point layout data preparation software differs. Contractors regularly face these issues when using robotic total stations. The goal of this class is to provide some insight to these common issues and offer suggestions of how to deal with them.

Learning objectives:
1. Understand how a robotic total station is used for laying out on a construction site
2. Understand the different data file formats used to prepare data for layout
3. Understand some of the layout data preparation software tools available
4. Understand the basic workflow for preparing data for layout on the jobsite

Construction Document Control for MEP Contractors

Of course technology is revolutionizing the way buildings are built, and, yes, the construction industry is piling on board the technology rocket ship. But did the industry only recently discover the importance of sharing project information and collaborating with fellow contractors?

The answer is no. MEP contractors have led the collaboration game for decades. The struggle we face today isn’t about figuring out how to implement the latest A.I. tools into our projects, it’s about learning to implement methods of contractor software that combine technology with the knowledge and experience of those who have spent decades building projects into the tools we develop for construction projects today and in the future.

During this session, we’ll take a look at how project controls documentation has been handled in the past and available options for sharing information, streamlining operations, building efficiency on your projects, and improving the bottom line in your business.
